ESSENCE Wins A 2022 Countrywide Magazine Award for Images
The American Society of Journal Editors presented their 2022 ASME Awards previous night time and ESSENCE walked away a winner in the pictures category for the visuals, “Of Earth & Sky,” by Lorna Simpson from the January/February 2021 concern.
Deputy Editor Cori Murray, alongside artistic director Nia Lawrence, approved the award. In Murray’s acceptance speech, she stated of ESSENCE staying acknowledged the prestigious Ellie trophy. “Lorna Simpson was quoted in the New York Instances saying that, when she was directing Rihanna, she instructed her to assume of herself as a big. Effectively, I sense like a large tonight. Thank you.”
The fellow nominees in the images group were Countrywide Geographic, Poetry, Stranger’s Guide and Time.
The 57th once-a-year Nationwide Magazine Awards are sponsored by ASME and the Columbia Journalism College they had been held at Brooklyn Steel in Williamsburg, New York. A few other noteworthy wins from the 2022 ASME Awards, provided:

This was ESSENCE’s to start with nomination for images. The journal has been nominated in other classes, such as Basic Excellence in 2011 and 2014, in accordance to Nina Fortuna, ASME’s director of operations. ESSENCE gained the Nationwide Journal Award for Fiction in 1976.

The larger sized-than-existence pictures, a continuation of the artist’s collage sequence “Of Earth & Sky,” reimagines the narrative of how Black women, their bodies and natural beauty, are portrayed in media. In two of the 11 pictures, Rihanna is juxtaposed versus an indigo evening sky, appearing as a literal star, in an additional she’s parading throughout a city bridge balancing a substantial Maximilian Davis feathered headpiece. The collaboration was referred to as “mesmerizing” “ravishing” and that Simpson’s function “awed audience.”
The day right after the launch of the Rihanna/Simpson include and accompanying photographs, the launch received around 4.8 billion media impressions and it was included by Vulture, Artnet News, Phaidon, ABC News, MSN.com, The Each day, Billboard, Page Six, US Weekly, ET Canada and more. Even NBA wonderful LeBron James Tweeted “Art is Magnificence and Black Art is even more Gorgeous.” We couldn’t concur much more.
